Pre-school is a time for children to begin their love of learning, their ability to get along with others and their interest in reaching out to the world. So, the teachers with a strong background in early childhood education can best provide for children what they need to grow physically, emotionally and intellectually. The transition from home to pre-school to primary grades becomes smooth if the teacher is a mentor; effective counselor and social psychologist who can take into account the student needs, differences and abilities of the children.

Children have a tendency to identify themselves with their parents and elders in the surroundings. They adopt them as their role models. Thus, early childhood is an age when children develop the value structure and moral beliefs based on the living examples of educators. As primary educators, the parents should endeavour to transfer the positive virtues to the children.

There is a wide consensus that early childhood development is the foundation for the later years. James Heckman, winner of the Nobel Prize in economics, even suggested that we should pay more for preschool education than university education. The pressure to find better preschools has increased because most parents have become consumers, rather than providers, of early childhood education services. They want “the best” for their child, and they want answers to their questions. However, experts often disagree on what should be done with young children, where, when and by whom. Clearly early childhood years are being taken seriously now. In fact, it has been stressed that it is during this stage that the scientific temper can be fostered amongst children. This article makes an attempt to find out the strategies that can be adopted to develop a scientific temper amongst the children.

Professor CV Raman delivered a lecture on December 22, 1968 on the occasion of laying of the Foundation Stone ceremony of the Community Science Centre in Ahmadabad.  He spoke eloquently about the processes of scientific inquiry.  He refers to explanations of several complex phenomena in his discussion of how to resolve a seemingly simple scientific question: “Why is the sky blue?” The following paper elaborates on how Dr. Raman’s ideas can help foster a better understanding and implementation of ECCE.
